Out of surgery

Mom went into recovery at 4:30PM. Dr. Hunter came to speak with us a few minutes later. He said the procedure went very well. It took longer than anticipated because some instruments that were needed had to be obtained and brought into that O.R. Apparently different hospitals do things differently and don’t bring in some of the tools until they’re needed. Of course this then prolongs the surgery. He’s a great person. I was remarking earlier how some of the doctors come into this large room with 30 people in it and stand there telling all the details of surgeries with family members while others are much more private and discrete. Dr. Hunter walked with us to the hallway and went over everything.

The vertical incision was in the front a couple inches above the navel and the size of his fist where he was able to reach in and extract the kidney. This was the anticipated procedure. We won’t know anything about the pathology of the tumor for about three days.

We expect to go to her room before long. The doctor said that he wants Mom to sit up for a few seconds as soon as she is able and then stand and take a few steps, etc. This will probably occur tomorrow. Other movement… minor as it may be, will cause the organs and muscles to again get used to movement. She is expected to be here until Monday or Tuesday.

We are grateful to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. When I created my mailing list for this experience in our lives it was very heartening to realize the great number of friends, family, and colleagues that we may count on. Thank you all!
